Gates of Middle School in Nanning City

[ You can enlarge some pictures by click it ]

I saw an interesting post just a moment ago, it shows pictures of almost all the gates of middle schools in Nanning City. Though many picture is taken by cellphone, but it give you a chance to see what the middle schools’ gates look like in Nanning, very interesting.

Honestly, I haven’t seen all these gates with my own eyes, so it’s the first time for me to see them all too.

One more thing, the schools are usually named by numbers in China mainland, like No.2 middle school or No.3 high school etc. But few of them have unique names besides the numbers, usually because they have a special history or the other name is more popular. And the number of schools is not聽 consecutive all the time, some of the numbers would missing. I don’t know the reason yet, maybe the schools is no longer exist.

Below are the pictures of these middle school (Secondary School/High School):

  1. Bruce, Middle School? What grades do they have? In the US we have High School which normally has grades 9-12. Our middle school ( called Junior High School) has grades 7-8. and our elementary school is has grades1-6.

Also in your middle school (what we normally call High school) do you refer to 1st year, 2nd year, 3rd year students? What is the last year student called? Sorry for all the silly questions but sometimes when I talk to the younger students I am not sure which school year they are reffering to. I hope you did well on your exams.

  2. Ok, we have the same education system like yours, but usually we don’t use “grade” to tell the school year all the time. And I find that different country use different English name to call there school years, makes me a little hard to pick the right words when translating.

Here is what I know in China Mainland:
Childen usually go to school at 7. Starts from elementary school(灏忓), grade 1-6. Then Junior High(鍒濅腑), 3 years, in your way of saying is grade 7-9. Then Senior High(楂樹腑), 3 years, like your grade 10-12. Then University. Hope I made myself clear.

Maybe I should write a new post about the education system in China Mainland…

  3. Bruce, You are doing a great job and I appreciate the quick response.

In the states students are referred to as Freshmen ( or ninth graders), Sophomores (or tenth graders), Juniors (or Eleventh grades) and Seniors ( or twelfth graders).

Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors are also used to differentiate the student levels in college also. A Freshman in College is sometime refer as a first year student.

My question has to do with : Is when a friend is talking about a first year student in High School I sometimes think that she is talking a student that is a Senior in High school. Because she is talking about preparing them for college examination. Sorry if I am not clear with my question.

I think that many aspects of the Chinese education system is different than the education system that we have in the west.

  4. Nice to see these pictures. Love Nanning and chinese public schools. Chinese students it’s the dream for a language teacher. It’s a good post, thanks to the author.

  5. Hello Bruce-I just stumbled upon your site tonight. I was googling No. 19 Middle School in Nanning. Tomorrow will be 9 years since our daughter was found outside the gate of No. 19 Middle School when she was approximately 3 days old. I was teaching art K-8 here in the US at the time and I have always thought that was a smart place to leave her. I always think perhaps it was one of the students who went to get help for her. Someone from the school contacted Changgang Police Station and then she was taken to Nanning SWI. I will forever be grateful for the unknown people in Nanning who helped her. We are planning a homeland trip to China in the spring of 2012 and we will be visiting Nanning, including a visit to the orphanage. We hope to again see her foster mother who took care of her from 3 months until we adopted her when she was 12 months old. About a year ago I had figured out the location of the school on a map I had and was able to use google earth to get a view of the roof of the building but you have a photo of the gate. Thank you for posting this photo!

  6. Looking at the time difference for you today actually marks the date she was found.

  7. Hi Bruce, thanks for your website!

    Theresa,

What a story. I am so surprised that you could find a girl in Nanning. Sad and happy in the same time. I am sure that you are very happy to raise her now here in the U.S. – assuming that is where you live now. If one day you will take your daughter back to China to visit her hometown, please don’t hesitate to contact me to find a local guide for you. I used to teach in two the Nanning middle schools listed here and lived close by Changgang Police station.

  8. Dear Bruce,

I am delighted with your website on Nanning. Very good, man!
Very hard to find information about Nanning.
I am Brazilian, Rio de Janeiro, I and my family (husband and two small children) will in September 2016 live in Nanning.
I am very concerned, not against international school for them, John has 7 years and Julia four years. I desnconfiando that in Nanning there is no international school
I am also having trouble finding places to live, some rent … Would you like some neighborhood where has other foreigners, because then it would be easier for children to adapt in the beginning …
I’d be happy to could help me!
    Thank you !
