It is interesting that most people who lives in Nanning can speak Cantonese, so it is not a suprise that we have our own Cantonese Opera Troupe. Cantonese Opera is singing in Cantonese, not like the Beijing opera in Mandarin. Like many other Chinese operas, today many young people are not interesting in that kind of opera, though it is part of the Chinese traditional culture, so the Cantonese oprea is not that popular in this city.

  1. Bruce, I never knew that Nanning had an actual opera house. Is there more than one? Can you tell me where it is located? Very nice presentation.

  2. What you see in the picture is “Xin Hui Shu Yuan”(鏂颁細涔﹂櫌), actually it was not a opera house, it was a school in the ancient times. But sometimes you can see Cantonese opera there. Location is No.42 JieFang Rd(瑙f斁璺42鍙).

There is a formal opera house in 鏄熷厜澶ч亾. But I never been there before.

  3. Bruce, it was nice to happen onto your blog. Thanks for the variety of insight.

Is their a visual arts community in Nanning. Artist studios , Galleries, or public art sites? I am a visual artist and I am coming to Nanning for a visit.
